LOG IN. All you tube guys out there, which do you prefer? What are sound characteristics of each I like 'em both. But I love my 45s even better! Much depends on the amp design that the tubes are in, but the B tends to be known to have plenty of bottom end and higher power at 8 watts, and the 2A3 is more famous for transparent detail with less power at about 4 watts.

Emission Labs 300B XLS (Pair)

Triode freaks, like myself, find themselves going for lower and lower power, and more detail, delicacy, and transparency. I find that the 45 is a great combination of "just enough power" to drive an efficient speaker, and give an awesome display of "thermionic coolosity" as Harvey Dr.

Gizmo used to say. TWL, you're such a showoff :- I echo his sentiments, my personal taste leaned to the 2A3's if you have the speaker for it. I had the Wright 2A3 mono's at one point, and they didn't give up much in "slam" capability to the B's I've heard! But throughout the mids, 2A3's seemed more pure, clear. Smoother highs, maybe a little rolled off compared to B's, but I loved them still. Still haven't got to hear a based amp, though! When using triode tube, smaller I mean power output is better better sounding.

If you really go for the SE Triode thing, you should get yourself a pair of highest efficient speakers that you can get or build and then you can play with any triode tubes you like. Twl above:"Much depends on the amp design that the tubes are in" I agree with that. Below is a comment by Lynn Olson that has cauesd me to experiment with the driver stage a bit.

I think it is harder to put a finger on what exactly is causing a particular sound than is sometimes thought. It's when they are driven by feeble mA driver tubes that the characteristic 45, 2A3, B, or signature appears. Something to consider anyway. I remain. Clueless, How about a choke-coupling from 6SN7 to 45? With battery power, and ZOTL output from the 45s? Craig, I'm just teasing. I love this amp!

You guys are the only ones that I can share it with, because nobody else I know can even comprehend what I'm talking about with this amp. I hope you don't mind that I mention it from time to time, because I just need to share the joy that I am getting from it.I seem to chronically underestimate a lot of things.

This was a fun assignment, but also tedious. The bottom line? That said, each tube had its strong points, and I tried to take a somewhat objective approach to the comparison work. I had help there, so some acknowledgements are in order first. This worked out really well. The Finale amp stayed with me until the end of October, and many of the back to back shootout rounds were done with it. September was when most of the critical listening sessions happened.

Which probably helped me stay more objective. Before starting, I ran all the tubes in for hours, since they were new. One of them had a short, and since it was the only pair available at the time, they were unfortunately eliminated from the review. I did make an effort to get others, but none were forthcoming.

In my view this is still an important review: the B is not a cheap triode by any means, and the most desired variants border on unobtanium. The tubes on review here are the workhorses providing daily duty to thousands of B amp owners.

I needed to select some music that could be used to analyze the strengths or weaknesses in each tube. The rating scale waswith minimum 0.

The music ranged from Springsteen to Mussorgsky, but in between, mostly well-known jazz.

Triode Roundup: Seven “Common Man” 300B Tubes Compared

What did I learn in the process? Chinese power triodes like the B have come a long way in the last few years. Shootouts are a lot of work. Absolutely not. Would it be more definitive with a panel of listeners?

2A3 buyer's guide, 4 PSVANE SHUGUANG by tube tester, actual music by 2a3 tube amplifier

Probably not, just more complicated. No, thanks. These are tubes, for crying out loud. Tube rolling is supposed to be fun. Having said all that ……no one has done a B Shootout since around I got the opportunity, and thought yeah, it was time for one. My last challenge with getting started, was, where to start? I mean, with the ratings. What this means is that with each new piece of music, the 98 set the tone and received a 7.Removes Digital Harshness. Adds Lushness to Vinyl.

One for the main amps and one for the subwoofer amp. Use it with the most sensitive headphones and experience a dead black, silent background. Spectrum analysis reveals just how quiet this product is. The largest noise component is at Hz and measures a bit over 50 microvolts.

That corresponds to a signal to noise ratio referenced to 1 volt output that is pushing up against dBA, a truly inaudible level. The noise at 60 Hz is mostly caused by AC power signals bleeding into the test setup. Most everything else is far below 10 microvolts. Distortion levels are virtually immeasurable. There is a barely detectable blip at Hz and the tiniest 3rd harmonic at Hz.

Nothing else. Taken at 4 volts peak-to-peak. Left picture shows 10, Hz square wave is nearly perfect. Only the slightest ringing is barely visible. Right picture shows Hz square wave. Minmal tilt indicates outstanding phase linearity in the deep bass.

I have 45's, 2a3's but no b's. Am I missing something. Starting another build and need to make a decision. The 45 and 2A3 are honest. The B is a "showman". Lots of folks like the B's euphony, but it IMO generates excessive 2nd order harmonic distortion.

What kind of amplifier are you going to build next, Push Pull or Single Ended? I have built B Push Pull amps that have almost no 2nd harmonic distortion, and almost no 2nd order intermodulation distortion.

Even some Single Ended B amps have low 2nd harmonic distortion. It depends on the plate voltage, plate current, grid bias, transformer primary impedance, and especially not designing it to squeeze too much power out of it.

Unfortunately many use the B to get more power, not to get more finesse. I have built SE 45 amps. But getting quality pairs or quads is hard. I might build parallel 45 amps if I could get inexpensive NOS tubes that match well. Dollars per watt adds up when you have to use 2 or 4 each 45 tubes per mono block.

I have built 2A3, 6B4G, and 6A3 amps. Some of the 6A3 and 2A3 tubes were not strictly made to original design, they were made as mono plates. I would probably build more 2A3 amps if they did not need 2.

Teco tk 1000 chiller

I use individual self bias, so that is 4 each 2. I believe that 2. I agree that there is a difference between 2A3s and Bs but I have found much more difference in the choice of driver tube and the type of driver circuit than I ever did between power tube types.

That, for me, is for either triode or pentode outputs. Little relative difference. If you change the driver tube or circuit it's a new amp. Maybe it's speaker dependent.

VinylSavor: B :. I agree, the driver tube type and circuit values makes a big difference. It was driven by RC coupling from the driver. The driver has a self bias resistor with a bypass cap.If you are a lover of single ended triode amplifiers, no doubt you are familiar with the mighty B. The mightiest of them all are the vintage Western Electric Bs, and then if you can find them, the reissued WE Bs that came out around or so.

Never should have gotten rid of those. Oh well. Today, the B amps have had a bit of a resurgence and to some, they never went away — just like vinyl but there are no incredible tubes to power them with. Having listened to more than my share of the current Bs, most manufacturers have settled on Electro Harmonix or JJ, because they are available.

Nope, these are 5, hour tubes on a good day. Most manufacturers have voiced around the current tubes, but that only goes so far. Not so bad if you have SET monoblocks, but it gets a bit spendy if you need four of em.

Where the Nagra has exceptional bass control, due to its massive, tight tolerance output transformers that are wound in-house, the EAT tubes bring a nearly solid state like grip to the lowest frequencies. An equal level of excitement is had on the upper register as well. Stringed instruments take on a more three-dimensional quality, with more texture. Pick your favorite acoustic guitar piece that you know well, and you will be surprised at how much more real the strings sound while being played, as well as the overtones that hang in the air after the strings have been struck.

This is the stuff we all love B amplifiers for in the first place and the EAT tubes give you more of it. I highly recommend their Bs, and hope to give the KT88s a spin sooner than later.

This tube has the classical grid construction and the tube curves of the B. It has the stronger Anode construction and larger glass of the vintage 52B however.

So in one tube we have combined the very best of two classical products. For use in Push Pull amplifiersthis is always the tube of choice, because this type of amplifier is hard on the tubes by definition. The B-XLS is made to deal with such conditions, and will allow the amplifier to play gently at low sound level, as well as reproduce higher sound level with the detail and precision you expect from a push pull amplifier.

For use in Single Ended amplifiersthe B-XLS is the best choice, since with those amplifiers good sound is coming from the right use of the tube, not over stressing the tube. The right use means, the tube should not be working at it's maximum electrical performance. Here we think the B-XLS is at it's right place, taking advantage of the higher electrical reserve this tube has.

The result is a more transparent sound picture at low or medium volume, while at higher volume, the dynamics of the original recording will stay unaffected. Sill it can be used in two ways if you want it. These two modes are explained here. Any amplifier that is trying to get as much as possible power out of a normal B, will benefit from the B-XLS. Improved sound and longer lifetime will be the result.

This can only be done when you have the possibility to adjust the settings of the amplifier. This is a specialty of the B-XLS. This will give a better damping factor of the bass and mid range loudspeakers, resulting in a more natural sound. Check our customer feedback section of the website! All critical parts, like filaments, grids and Anodes are constructed of hard metal for the best reliability and reproducible quality.

We have two versions for the heater: Normal heater, or Center Tapped heater. With the center tapped tubes, we enter a new field of applications.

300b sound

This has not been done before with Audio tubes. When biasing a DHT tube there is no cathode to connect something to. The cathode must be artificially constructed, by a resistor network. Since many years, all EML tubes already feature a center tapped heater, which is a way to enforce better electrical field geometry.

Only, to this center tap there was never an electrical connection. So to the tube itself we had to make no changes. To the center tap of the heater, is now connected a wire, which becomes the third connection to the heater. Now the tube has five wire connections, and for this reason we can not use the 4 Pin UX4 base any more.

We have chosen for the Octal base. It must be said, the V4 is a very special tube, which fulfills the needs of Circuit Design purists the best possible way. Depending on how you do it, you can enter new design fields, or you may choose to connect the center tapped tubes just the classical way.As a thank you for the B amplifier schematics, Stamou has shared with us his implementation of the B single-ended SE tube amplifier schematic by J.

I have assisted by translating, formating and presenting his DIY B triode amplifier project. Please take a look at the SE B schematic for a description of Mr. Morrison's SE B tube amplifier circuit which I will refer to as the "original schematic". Specifically recommended in the circuit notes was that premium output transformers and components be used for the B amplifier build. The output stage is a SE B triode and the maximum power output is about 8 Watts per channel.

The exact values and brands of the parts that I used for my SE B triode amplifier build are shown in Figure 1.

You should expect that the values of R7 and R8 will need to be adjusted slightly in order to achieve the target voltages shown in the schematic. The schematic shown in Figure 1 is for one channel only with the exception of the power transformer T2 which is shared between both amplifier channels. Keep this in mind as you are making up a parts order list for this B SET amplifier project. The voltages noted in Figure 1 are measurements from my B triode amplifier build and compare closely to the voltages shown on the original SE B schematic.

The voltage at these test points will change slightly with different tubes sets so don't expect to match the shown voltages exactly.

Remember that the maximum anode voltage for the B triode tube is V. I did not deviate all that much from the original SE B schematic that I was following. For improved performance an anode choke L2 was been added to each channel.

R7 was adjusted from the original value of 27k to 15k to attain the target voltages. To further improve performance from this B triode amplifier the power supply filtering sections have been duplicated for each channel. While the power transformer T2 is shared between both channels, each audio channel has separate rectifier, chokes and filter capacitors.

Using a separate tube rectifier 5U4-GB for each channel results in a decreased voltage loss across the tube rectifier.
